THURSDAY 17TH OF DECEMBER 2020

Christmas is fast approaching and the nation prepares for a slight relaxation of the lockdown rules with mixing of up to 3 households from December 23rd to 27th which will be a welcome change albeit with likely stricter rules come January!

During Christmas, it is normal for dental practices to close and take a well earned rest during the festive period. We are no exception and our doors will close from 1730 on 22nd December. However, if you have a dental emergency and would like to speak with a dentist, Dr Nissit Patel will still be available via video consultation for remote advice, prescriptions as required and home care instructions. To book an appointment, simply follow click video consultation

Top tips to avoid dental emergencies

Prevention is far better than cure! Here are our top 5 tips to avoid dental emergency treatment:

1. Avoid very hard crunchy food such as boiled sweets, crusty bread and nuts (yes, we know it's Christmas!)

2. Avoid extremes of hot and cold. Temperature changes within the mouth. Temperature changes can lead to sensitivity and inflammation leading to pain.

3. Watch out for stones in fruit. Make sure fruits are pitted or de stoned. Biting on an olive stone can cause serious damage for example.

4. Keep sugary snacks to a minimum. The frequency of sugar intake is linked to tooth decay. The lower the frequency the lower the risk.

5. If you grind your teeth, use a night guard! Tooth grinding or bruxism can cause severe damage to teeth over time. See more Using a night guard can prevent wear and tear and protect your filings, dental crowns and bridges and dental implants for example.

We are open for emergency treatment on 29th December

We will be open on December 29th for dental emergency treatment from 0900-1400. Please call us, book online or e mail us on info@progressivedentisry.co.uk to arrange an appointment. We will not be accepting walk in visits, sorry!

THURSDAY 3RD OF DECEMBER 2020

Our case of the month for November is cosmetic bonding or teeth bonding which is one of our favourite treatments. For those of you unaware of the process, let us explain for you.

The Process of Cosmetic Bonding

Essentially, the process is completely pain free. There is no cutting of the teeth so the underlying tooth enamel is left completely intact. Now this is a huge advantage! Removing tooth enamel removes the hardest tissue in the body and weakens the tooth considerably. There is no going back. Over time, the loss of enamel can lead to bacterial infiltration which can lead to softening of the tooth dentine eventually causing active tooth decay, pulpal inflammation (nerve pain) and possibly even the death of the nerve. After this, root canal treatment awaits. Why risk this?

Cosmetic bonding is an additive approach where composite resin is layered over the tooth surface to enhance, protect and improve the aesthetics of the tooth or teeth. The tooth is usually washed and dried using a special process called 'tooth etching', a bonding agent will be applied and set with a blue light. We will use an orange filter which is for our benefit protecting our eyes; it is not a magic wand!

Once the tooth or teeth have been enhanced with the process, the composite must be polished. This can take a while but those final few minutes make all the difference.

Can teeth be whitened after cosmetic bonding?

We always advise tooth whitening prior to teeth bonding so that we can match the shade to the newly whiter colour. You cannot do this the other way around. i.e we cannot place a whiter composite and then do tooth whitening to match this shade. However, you can used whitening trays on bonded teeth and this will lift off surface stains quite well.

How long does teeth bonding last?

That is a great question and depends on your bite and eating habits. If you eat a soft diet and do not grind your teeth at night, then the bonding will last for ages. It will last even longer if a night guard is used. If you have a very heavy bite and have been diagnosed with bruxism (grinding at night), the composite will need to be replaced on a more regular basis. Nothing lasts forever and you will have to consider maintenance over the years and the associated costs.

Our case

Here are the before and after photographs on our case of the month:

So here we have a simply stunning case and real smile makeover using this wonderful technique. The front 4 teeth were treated by Dr Nissit Patel using Empress Direct composite ; one of the best. For more cases, please visit the bonding page on our website
