How can you change the colour of a dark front tooth?

One of the most common causes of discoloured teeth is due to a 'dead tooth' or a tooth that is root filled. All of our teeth are supplied by nerve and blood supply. Now when a tooth needs a root canal treatment, this supply called the pulp is removed which can lead to the deposition of blood products within the tooth which is then absorbed by the tooth leading to a darker colour. On a back tooth, this may not have any major issue but on a front tooth is a different matter altogether!

Case of the Month June 2025

Our case of the month is a classic one of a dark front tooth after a childhood trauma will resulted in a root canal treatment. Over the years the tooth became darker and discoloured. We were asked three specific questions before treatment:

1. Can we hide the colour of the tooth and make it look more natural?

2. Can we improve the shapes of the teeth at the same time?

3. Can we close the spaces between the teeth?

After careful planning and digital assessment, the answer to all three questions was 'YES'!

We can see here the left central tooth is discoloured and there is quite obvious asymmetry present in terms of widths, heights, spacing and gum levels.

After careful digital planning and tooth whitening, a crown was placed on the discoloured tooth and veneers on the adjacent teeth. He did not want a Hollywood white smile and asked for characterisation for a natural smile which was music to our ears.

What did the process involve and how long did it take?

As alluded to above , the key aspect was the planning. Once we had our digital projection of the final outcome, we used this as our guide to the entire treatment. Tooth whitening is always the first step with internal and external whitening first. The only area where we had to prepare tooth structure to any degree was the dark tooth as we needed to block the brown shade. The adjacent teeth were micro preparations only. Provisional veneers were then placed using the projection and the our lab worked their magic. The fitting stage was next with a turnaround time of only two weeks. Composite Bonding vs. Porcelain Veneers: Which is Right for Your Smile?

To answer this question, we really need to differentiate the two treatments as they are two different treatment entirely. Composite bonding is an additive process. In simple terms, we carefully sculpt composite resin over the teeth in question. This can be used to treat chipped, fractured, uneven and gappy teeth. Composite can also be used to replace old fillings on front ( or back) teeth. The great advantage of bonding includes:1. Treatment is completed in one visit; an instant smile transformation! 2. Min… CONTINUE READING

Composite veneers vs Porcelain veneers. Which is best?

One of the most topical subjects at the moment is the debate between composite and porcelain for dental restorations. In terms of cosmetic dentistry, this equates to the use of composite veneers and porcelain veneers. It is important to note that composite veneers can either be made by a laboratory or placed free hand by the dentist in the chair. Porcelain veneers can only be made by a dental laboratory or within a dental practice that has the necessary technology such as computer aided design and a milling… CONTINUE READING

How to whiten a discoloured tooth

Our case of the month for July involves a treatment to whiten a discoloured lower front tooth. We will often come across darker teeth when they have undergone a root canal treatment due to the loss of the nerve and blood supply. Often the degradation of blood products from the pulp tissue within the dentinal tubules cause the tooth dentine to be gradually discolour and give that inherent grey/ dark appearance. This can be quite unsightly especially on a front tooth. For back teeth, in almost every case, we … CONTINUE READING

Porcelain Veneers To Transform A Smile

Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular ways of transforming a smile. Veneers are outer facings that cover the tooth/teeth to repair issues such as chips, fractures, asymmetry, discolouration or protect old fillings. The transformation of a smile can be life changing. A smile is one of the first things that is evident on a person and this can radiance confidence and self-belief. The treatment for veneers is not a straightforward one and requires careful planning and execution to achieve an outstanding… CONTINUE READING
